Rowing Sports Section

Introduction

Welcome to the newest Sports Section Lancashire Constabulary Sports and Social Club.

The sport is based on the use Concept 2 Indoor Rowing ‘ergometers’ which are available in almost every reasonably equipped fitness room in the world. You may have used one before just to warm up, but it is in fact a worldwide sport in itself.

The purpose of me forming a Constabulary Section is to help you:

  • Safely use the machines as part of a general fitness programme (steady rowing is great for `fat-burning`, improving heart/lung function, and general strength and fitness)

  • Follow structured but varied training programmes in accordance with your training aims

  • Improve your performance and compare yourself against other rowers throughout GB and the world by entering your `personal best` times (Distances are 2,000, 5000, 10,000 metres and marathons) in the British ranking magazine and World ranking Internet site.

  • Compete in open competition at the regional, national and international level.

It is a fact that the annual Concept 2 British Ranking publication and Internet site lists many members from British Police forces.

Many Police personnel compete in Open Regional and National events as well as the bi-annual World Police and Fire Games.

Training for competition is an extremely demanding mental and physical discipline, but sports injuries are uncommon. It is age, gender and weight categorised with competitors competing from 10 to 90 years of age, so no excuses there.

It is my intention to use the Section as a self help training network to swop training schedules, encourage each other, give advice and coaching tips.

I also intend the Section members to raise sponsorship/funds in order to help finance a team of rowers to the next World Police and Fire Games which are being held at Barcelona in summer 2003.

So, if you are interested in training on the Concept2 ‘ergo’, for whatever reason, please contact me and get on my Rowing Section email list.

For information on training or competition, enquiries should be made with the Section secretary PC Sue Palmer.
