'Certificates of Sporting Achievement' - 2001

PC Mark Woolston based at Ormskirk, Southern Division was one of four nominations submitted to the committee for the annual 'Sports Personality of the Year Award'.

All nominations were of a high standard but the committee, in favour of PC Woolston's achievements gave a unanimous vote.

The remaining three nominations were: -

PS Adrian Beardmore, Human Resources, Leyland, Southern Division.

Sister Marian Orford, Occupational Welfare Unit, Hutton.

Ms Liz Ransome, Southern Division Communications Room, Hutton.

These nominations were again, all of a high standard and the committee felt that the individuals deserved recognition for their achievements. It was decided to present them with a 'Certificate of Sporting Achievement'.

PS Adrian Beardmore

Adrian Beardmore is an inspiration to all who meet him. At 28 years of age he was diagnosed with cancer. He received intensive treatment at Christies Hospital and at the time, the outlook was not good. Adrian was positive, being strong in character and with great courage, overcame his illness and returned to work after 12 months.

A few months later he became ill again and resumed intensive treatment at Christies. However, with sheer determination and courage he made a good recovery and now enjoys a comparatively active life. He has now returned to work carrying out duties in the Human Resources department at Leyland.

Adrian, a keen footballer, cricketer and runner, decided to compete in the 2001 London Marathon to raise money for the Christie Hospital, Manchester. He finished the 26-mile course in a respectable time just behind Sir Stephen Redgrave. His story was captured in a half page article in the Daily Telegraph.

Mrs Liz Ransome - PC Mark Woolston and PS Adrian Beardmore

Adrian never gave up hope and his courage and determination during his illness and his sporting achievement following, is an inspiration to all who know him.

Sister Marian Orford

Sister Marian Orford, of the Headquarters Occupational Welfare Department, has contributed greatly to the health and fitness of the Constabulary staff as a whole for many years. Among her many roles she has been dedicated in carrying out the tasks of the Unit that include health screening and aerobic and circuit training.

Much of this time and dedication has 'gone beyond the call of duty'. In more recent times she has carried many of these health and fitness tasks in her own time, during lunchtimes and evenings.

The classes have gone from strength to strength with the numbers attending continually on the increase and popularity.

This award is a formal recognition for her dedication, enthusiasm and motivational skills that contribute significantly to the health, fitness and welfare of the Constabulary.

Mrs Liz Ransome

Mrs Liz Ransome, the team leader at the Southern Control room, has given a high degree of dedication, time and commitment to table tennis over the last 30 years.

She has played for the force at regional and national level in the PAA championships where she has been successful on a number of occasions. Her best performance was back in 1975 when she won the PAA national single's championships.

Liz has also played at local level for police teams in the Blackpool and District League and has again achieved many successes as an individual and a team member. She has been secretary of this league for many years organising the team to play in championship events.

Her dedication and personality has carried the team through on many occasions. Liz still plays competitively and is likely to do so for many years to come.
