Sports Section - Feature
ACPO National Police Lifesaving
Although
not included under Sports and Social, Police Officers who are members of the
Swimming Section may also have the opportunity to compete in the A.C.P.O.
Police National Lifesaving Championships that are held annually at different
venues throughout the country. Teams consist of five members of either an
all male, all female or a mixed team.
The
competition is run under the Royal Lifesaving Society Competition Rules and
is run in four stages
Stage 1 – a timed rope
throw to recover a subject in the water
Stage 2 – a timed swim
and tow in the pool to recover a subject
Stage 3 – a “dry land”
first aid incident where the team are presented with an unknown mock
accident scenario and are expected to deal and treat with the casualties.
Stage 4 – an “open
Water” incident where the team are presented with an unknown mock drowning
scenario, usually staged in a lake or reservoir and are expected to deal and
treat with the casualties.

Police Life Saving is
a way to improve your first Aid skills in order to better equip you for the
incidents that operational officers may encounter during the course of their
duties and competitions such as this and Police Life Saving generally
continues to play an important role in raising and testing basic skill
levels amongst our staff who have a core duty to protect life. Indeed,
continued involvement is also essential if the valuable partnership between
the Police Service and the Royal Life Saving Society is to be preserved.
