Football Sports Section

By Assistant Secretary Alan Martin

The Lancashire Constabulary Football Section continues to enter teams in the West Lancashire Football League, associated cups, Lancashire Football Association Amateur Shield, PSUK Open and Veterans Cup and the regional Frank Close Cup.

The past year as been particularly unusual for the football section because there were no real successes in any competition. This section as became accustomed to winning trophies, or reaching national cup finals. The PSUK Open Section Team reached the National Quarter Finals but were knocked out away to Cleveland Police. The PSUK Veterans Team failed to qualify for the knock out stage, the first time since entering the competition.

The Section continues to attract new footballers of all ages and now have a good mix of both Police Officers and Police Staff.

We are hoping to return to winning ways in 2009, and should any new players wish to represent the County then please contact the Football Secretary.

The highlight of the last year for the football section was the 'Vets' retaining the PAA National Vets Trophy for the 4th successive year with an excellent victory against the 'Met Police' at Maine Road, Manchester last May.  The 'Vets' have maintained their high standards this season having already qualified for the national quarterfinals with a game to spare in the Regional Group.

The '1st team' were eliminated in last years PAA at the quarter final stage by Strathclyde Police and have already qualified for the same stage again this season with an imminent fixture against South Wales Police.

A joint team has reentered the Regional Frank Close Cup this season, the first time since 1997.

There is no doubt that the performances of both teams, but particularly the dominance of the 'Vets' team in their trophy ensures that Lancashire Constabulary retain their reputation as one of the countries leading football sections.

The '1st team' continues to represent the Constabulary in the community of Lancashire with participation in the West Lancashire League, Division 2. The team are having a mixed season on a Saturday and will finish in mid table, however the importance of our participation in this league should not be under estimated both to enhance the Police's standing in the community and to support our PAA successes.

The football section is supported by our own committee, who work very hard throughout the season to arrange the fixtures, manage our equipment and ensure players turn up, who without the section would not be so successful.

The membership of the section stands at about 50 members now but we continue to recruit further footballers and new members are always welcome.

Probably one of the most active sections of the club with both Open and Veteran team players.

The Open team finished mid-table in the West Lancashire League and in the League Cup they were knocked out in the 2nd round.

In the Lancashire FA Shield they again made the 2nd round and likewise just 2nd round in the PAA National Cup.

Despite this, the Veteran's team made up the slight shortfall by winning outright the PAA Veterans' Cup.

Ian Dawson of Central Division was elected as 2001 'Players Player of the Season'.
