SPORTS & SOCIAL CLUB

Sports Personality of the Year 2002

Each year members of the various sports sections of the Lancashire Constabulary Sports & Social Club make recommendations to the main committee for this award.

The award, known as the Ormerod Trophy, is named after its benefactor, Mrs Ethel Ormerod, JP of Middleton. It was first presented in 1964.

It is intended to recognise a member of the force, police or support staff who has achieved a particular outstanding sporting performance or performances. Alternatively it may be awarded to an individual who has given a high degree of dedication, time and commitment to his or her sport. This may be during the previous 12 months or over a number of years.

Five nominations were received by the County club committee and short-listed were:-

DC David Watkinson - Penwortham CID - Southern Division

Ms Susan Harrison - HQ - MCU

The committee felt that both individuals had a very similar sporting background with matching qualities and characters. They are both active members of the athletics section and Dave has also been active with the squash section and Sue an active participant in Volleyball for many years.

The committee found it difficult to decide on who should receive the 2002 Sports Personality Award. However, after some deliberation, it was decided to present the award jointly to DC Watkinson and Ms Sue Harrison. This has been done once before back in 1975 when two badminton players jointly received the award.

The remaining three nominations were: -

PS Neil Gibson, Eastern Division - Tennis

Inspector John Lee, Western Division - Judo

PC Darren Hale, Western Division - Athletics

These nominations were of a very high standard and the committee were equally impressed with their sporting achievements over the years.

The Chief Constable presented the 'Sports Personality Ormerod Trophy' to DC Watkinson and Ms Harrison on Monday 10 March 2003.

Full details of the two individuals sporting performances and achievements can be viewed on the Club Intranet web-page at: -
