Welfare and Sports & Social Annual Report 2004
Wednesday, 06 April 2005
The accounts for 2004 have been formally audited and prepared. Copies to read are available in this office.
In summary
As you have been previously notified, over a number of years expenditure has continued to exceed income in order to reduce the vast surplus of some years ago (£18,000).
For the last 5-10 years expenditure has exceeded income to bring us down to a more necessary figure.
I intend to retain a permanent surplus of between £3k and £5k as a contingency fund.
We are now nearing that figure and steps were taken in 2003 and 2004 to lessen the overspend.
This has resulted in 2004 in a slight surplus of around 1k. As this is a fairly fragile situation I will continue to exercise prudence, but further reductions will not have to take place in 2005.
Sports societies can expend the same amounts as last year. As Burnley Gym spent nothing, they may overspend this year- subject to approval.
To reiterate previous resolutions. There are some aspects of expenditure, which I feel are untouchable or fixed.
They are
Welfare awards ( £15 and flexible )
Retirement gifts ( £50 )
TV provision
Tax and accountancy fees ( £700)
Referring back to last year’s notice of intentions
The cost of using Rolls Royce Gym was renegotiated with considerable savings
The subsidy for Rossendale Sports and Swimming centres was renegotiated without an increase.
The Rawtenstall Gaming Machine has been removed for accommodation purposes
A new machine at Nelson has been well used.
The financial trends in 2004 were largely the same as the previous year. However
Sports societies such as Burnley Gym and Golf seriously underspent in 2004.
There were fewer retirements.
Monies from the gaming machines increased.
Contrastingly the cost of subsidised trips and functions and television provision increased considerably.
In closing can I remind staff of the purpose of the Welfare Sports and Social.
It is to foster camaraderie amongst staff through either sporting or social means.
If you think you have an idea, intention or activity that may fall within our remit – give me a call.
Can I also remind people, especially supervisors of the Welfare aspect, most notably gifts for sick and injured colleagues as well as floral gifts for bereavements and other appropriate matters. Arranged through me .
