The section boasts talented members past and present who have competed in both European Police events and even the Commonwealth Games. However, most of our members are considered the 'average' runner who competes to improve his or her performance for the sheer enjoyment and satisfaction of keeping fit, building on experience and ....just simply running.

  Clay Shooting
Clay Shooting

Top of Page
   About

Clay shooting is a very competitive sport with an excellent camaraderie and social element. It required a degree of natural ability combined with experience through practice.

The sport is one of a very few that age, gender and physical capabilities does not matter.

The clay targets come in various shapes, sizes, colours and speeds. Some would say there is a lot of sky and not much

clay!

Clay shooting is an expensive sport and are still 'gritty' on toast! Nevertheless, a sport that is well worth the effort.

We are always looking for new members regardless of skill or ability.

  Cricket
Cricket

Top of Page
   About

The Cricket Section competed for many years in the Northern Police Cricket League, but following its demise in 1997 has just competed in the Police Athletic Association, now Police Sport UK, national knockout each year. This offers some great opportunities to play a very good standard of cricket, all over the country, sometimes at first-class or ‘minor counties’ cricket grounds.

The section also plays host to touring sides and has a long history of touring itself, mainly to Devon & Cornwall. In 2001 we competed in the International Police Cricket Festival in Perth, Western Australia. Closer to home, since the Headquarters cricket square was lost to building development, we play our home games at a number of local club grounds such as Great Harwood and Fleetwood.

Lancashire’s most successful season was in 1992 when narrowly beaten in the final by old rivals Nottinghamshire Police. After some years of dwindling interest and ageing squad members, in the last couple of years there has been a resurgence, with a number of quality players joining the Constabulary. The squad is probably now at its strongest for many years.

The Section is always eager to recruit new players, either officers or police staff, of all standards, from ex-professionals through regular club cricketers to casual players. Interested?

Golf - Men's
Golf

Top of Page
   About

The County Golf section is split into two distinct parts. The first part concerns the medals that are played over the summer and these are open to any golfer with a handicap, either club or society. They are  played on courses that suit all standards of golfer and all are made welcome. The second part of the section concerns the county team .

The team plays against other forces and organisations on a local, regional and national level. The team is generally made up of ten players and selection is done on  handicap and form. Over the recent years the team has had considerable success at all levels and competition for places is keenly fought. The broad message is that if you have never played in the team and wish to be considered , then play in the medals and let us get to know you. If we don't know how good you are then we can't pick you.

Players in the medals range from handicaps of 1 up to maximum so don't feel intimidated or that you're not good enough to compete. Turn up and play with your mates the first time and see that we don't bite. Golf is one of the few sports that has a handicap system that should put everyone on a level playing field, unless you play at Longridge !!!! The events will be posted on the intranet for next year so everyone will know about them in good time so you'll have no excuse not to play in them.

The secretary would like to hear from members of the force who want to play for the Golf Section.

  Rowing
Rowing

Top of Page
   About

The sport is based on the use Concept 2 Indoor Rowing ‘ergometers’ which are available in almost every reasonably equipped fitness room in the world. You may have used one before just to warm up, but it is in fact a worldwide sport in itself.

The purpose of me forming a Constabulary Section is to help you:

  • Safely use the machines as part of a general fitness programme (steady rowing is great for `fat-burning`, improving heart/lung function, and general strength and fitness)

  • Follow structured but varied training programmes in accordance with your training aims

  • Improve your performance and compare yourself against other rowers throughout GB and the world by entering your `personal best` times (Distances are 2,000, 5000, 10,000 metres and marathons) in the British ranking magazine and World ranking Internet site.

  • Compete in open competition at the regional, national and international level.

It is a fact that the annual Concept 2 British Ranking publication and Internet site lists many members from British Police forces.

Many Police personnel compete in Open Regional and National events as well as the bi-annual World Police and Fire Games.

Training for competition is an extremely demanding mental and physical discipline, but sports injuries are uncommon. It is age, gender and weight categorised with competitors competing from 10 to 90 years of age, so no excuses there.

It is my intention to use the Section as a self help training network to swop training schedules, encourage each other, give advice and coaching tips.

I also intend the Section members to raise sponsorship/funds in order to help finance a team of rowers to the next World Police and Fire Games which are being held at Barcelona in summer 2003.

So, if you are interested in training on the Concept2 ‘ergo’, for whatever reason, please contact me and get on my Rowing Section email list.

For information on training or competition, enquiries should be made with the Section secretary DC Sue Palmer.
