DC Ian Hill joined the force in 1994 and is currently the Wyre Crime Prevention Officer based in Northern Division. Members of the Golf Section nominated Ian for this title and after due consideration, he was voted by the Club Committee as the worthy recipient of the 'Sports Personality of the Year Award 2004'.
Sporting Career
Ian started playing golf at the age of 13 and soon attained a minus 28 handicap. At the age of 15 he had a minus 2 handicap when he won the Fylde Junior Championships played at Royal Lytham. By the time he was 20 he was playing from scratch. Ian has won the Fairhaven Club Championships on three occasions, the most recent in 2003/2004.
Over the past twelve months Ian has dedicated himself to his sport. At the start of 2004 he had a handicap of plus 2. This would place him in the top 1% of all golfers, not just in police circles!
During 2004, he decided to go part-time reducing his hours to 30 week. This enabled him to play in amateur championships. He has taken part in the Spanish Championship, British Amateur Championship, and numerous other leading amateur competitions, playing against some of the best in the world. In the British Championships he played alongside Gary Wolstenholme, the leading British amateur for the past twenty years.
Throughout this time, Ian has still found the time to represent the force team, as he has done for the past ten or more years. Ian has been part of the team that has won the British Police Team Championships on three occasions and which also reached the police Zone final in 2004.
Police Sport UK
On two previous occasions Ian has won the Police Sport UK ‘Regional’ title and in 2004, for the first time for a Lancashire Police officer, he won the prestigious Police Sport UK ‘National’ Championships held at Lindon Hall Golf Club, Newcastle. This competition was played over four days against 105 golfers who require a handicap of 5 or less to compete.
As a result of his form in the nationals, Ian has been selected on four occasions to represent the British Police team. He has also represented Lancashire Golf Union at all levels.
Ian has now taken on the role of secretary to the force team organising a series of events for his colleagues in the force. This highlights his dedication and commitment not only to the sport of golf but also to his other team mates serving in the Force and illustrates the reason why he was voted Sports Personality 2004.
Presentation
The award will be presented by the Acting Chief Constable at a formal ceremony at Lancashire Police Headquarters on 15 June 2005.
