Sports Personality 2010

DC Lisa Walker - FMIT, HQ

Nominated by: PC 3453 Kat Stokes and PC 3521 Nicola BINGHAM

Main Sporting Discipline: Netball

Lisa joined the Constabulary in 1991 and has spent most of her career at Western Division and is currently Detective at FMIT A/B Cluster enquiry team. Prior to joining the Police Lisa had already been selected to play for Lancashire County Netball team and represented the county from 1989 till 1999.

Lisa has been a pivotal member of the 1st team squad since joining the police and has won both the PSUK knockout competition and the annual tournament in her playing career.

In 2004 Lisa took over the running of Lancashire Police Netball Club. Through her dedication and leadership the club has gone from strength to strength. Lisa not only organises and runs the fortnightly training sessions at Hutton but also organisers all PSUK games for both the A and B squad. This is no easy task. Lisa has to constantly liaise between squad players to arrange a date which is suitably for up to 9 players as well as the opposition in a short time frame for when the match has to be played.  This is factoring in shift patterns, court commitments, cancelled rest days and also child care.  Lisa does this not only for the A team for which she plays but also the B team.

Lisa is not only secretary of the club, she takes care of the kit, organizes matches both in PSUK games but also in charity tournaments for the squad. Lisa takes care of booking referees for matches, transport to and from games. In fact everything in order that games can be played. All players have to do is turn up and play. The fact that so little is needed to be done by other members of the squad is a testament to the amount of hours of organising Lisa has done behind the scene.

When Lisa took over the squad the kit which was used was extremely tired date and not fit for purpose. Lisa has through both fundraising and from sports and social been able to slowly purchase new kit. Including shirts, vests and bibs for matches as well as tracksuits and jumpers.

It is also a testament to Lisa under her leadership that Lancashire has consistently been able to submit two teams not only into the knockout Cup and Plate competitions but also in the annual PSUK tournament.  To put this in context the Met only offer two teams in these tournaments North and South. So on reflection the fact that a force the size of Lancashire can do the same is a testament to the hard work and effort Lisa puts in to the club that two teams of a high playing standard are able to play in both annual knockout and tournament competitions.

Lisa is also an extremely talented netball player. Her drive and determination in running the club is equally matched on the court. The Lancashire A team for which Lisa plays at Wing Defence (WD) has come third in the PSUK tournament in both 2008 and 2009 out of an average of 36 teams.

In 2010 the A team narrowly missed out a place in the national Final of The PSUK Cup competition. The Northern final was between Lancashire & Northumbria and after travelling the long 3 hour plus journey up to Northumbria the squad lost by 1 goal.

Lisa also plays club netball in her local town of Blackpool. For many years Lisa played for the prestigious Mortgage Shop Team which won the Blackpool league year on year till the team disbanded in 2009. Since 2010 Lisa has played for Blackpool Automart which came 2nd in the 2010 league.

It is very fitting if Lisa is awarded the sports personality award this year as after the national tournament in Sept 2011 Lisa will be handing over the running of the club. The whole squad are in agreement that the Netball Club would not be the same friendly and successful club it is today without Lisa’s work over the years. Lisa Walker is a true sports woman in every sense of the word. Her drive and determination to win on the court is matched only by her dedication to police sport.

Lisa has been nominated for the Sports Personality of the Year award by the Lancashire Constabulary Netball Club.
