LANCASHIRE'S Peter Upton regained his national Police Sport UK veterans squash title with an excellent display at this year's finals held at Carlisle Squash Club.
The Veterans' competition was a keenly contested affair this year with more ‘new’ qualifiers of some quality entering.
Due to other commitments, a couple of the top players were unavailable; however this did not detract from the overall standard and quality of the matches.
The reigning champion, Peter Upton (Lancashire) met Terry Belshaw (Cumbria) in the semi-final and despite an excellent performance from the local Peter came through 3-1 .
In the other semi-final Jack Allen (PSNI) was in his usual determined frame of mind but just did not have enough to beat last years’ runner-up, and former Men’s Open Champion, Dave Sanders (Met). This provided a replay of last years’ final Peter retaining his title with a 3-1 victory (9/0 10/9 8/10 9/2).
Martin Papworth, chairman of the Police Sport UK squash section, said: "The contributions made by those who help the section are wide ranging and impressive, but there was one individual without whom there would have been little prospect of success, and who diligently and thoroughly ensured that the preparation, management and harmony of the competition was ensured.''
He added: "We would like to thank Terry Belshaw and the rest of the Cumbria police organising committee for making the whole weekend such a success. Their hard work was certainly appreciated.''
