Walking Sports Section

In September 2008 a seven strong race walking team comprising members of the Athletics and Running Section took part in the Police Sport UK Race Walk in Birmingham. DC Dave Watkinson (Southern), Mr Bill Murray, Ms Sue Harrison and Mr Graham Slater (HQ), SC Steve Broadbent, Mr Dave Wilkinson and Ms Ann Crofts (Northern) took part.
For some of the team it was their debut performance. The 10k course for men and 5k for women was in Canon Hill Park, Birmingham. The two Lancashire ladies were the only Police Sport UK women’s entries and therefore won the individual 1st and 2nd prizes.
The men’s team did equally as well coming 2nd team overall in the event.
Race Walking (or power walking) is becoming a popular sport and is perhaps less demanding than running. Notwithstanding this, the sport still requires a great amount of effort particularly if you are looking to do well.
