Click the 'Book It Zone' link below to enter! 16/12/2018 - The event is now on Facebook where you can join our 'Closed Group' and share your experience with other competitors. 30/06/2019 - The event limit has been reduced to just 50 places available (25 Teams) 15/07/2019 - I have taken the decision to postpone the 2019 event. The reason for this is the low number of entries. I have made full refunds to those who have entered and thank them for their support. Having analysed the reason for low entries I feel that the event is tough and appeals to only a small number of athletes. I have had many enquiries regarding the event being a 'relay' with two runners and two cyclists in a team of four. This would inevitably attact a greater number. I will therefore be considering reconfiguring the event for 2020 so please book-mark this page and wait for updates. Lakeland Slateman Events | The
'Lakeland Slateman' Event is back ...after a 20-year break! The first
successful Lakeland Slateman triathlons took place from 1993 to 1995. This was
followed by the very popular 'Lakeland Slateman Three Peaks' team fell run 1997 and 1998. 20 years or so on.....Have you still got what it takes to endure a Slateman event?....if so, then read on...... Lakeland Slate is tough and hard wearing and has definitely passed the test of time - so it is appropriate therefore that this event should be the first to take its name from this timeless mineral. All competitors will have to endure this gruelling 100km course via England's three highest mountain peaks...... within the day......between sunrise to sunset! |
Venue | The
event starts and finishes at Burns Farm near Keswick. The race HQ
provides a campsite for all competitors wishing to camp before and
after the event. The site has facilities and a local pub close by. The
event will include a complementary welcome pre-race pasta meal and a complementary post race presentation buffet. |
The Challenge | There are Seven Duathlon Legs... Leg 1 - Cycle - START - Burns Farm to Thirlmere - 9km Leg 2 - Run - Thirlmere - Helvellyn Summit and back - 10km Leg 3 - Cycle - Thirlmere - Seathwaite - 24km Leg 4 - Run - Seathwaite - Scafell Pike Summit and back - 22km Leg 5 - Cycle - Seathwaite- Lonscale Fell Car Park - 18km Leg 6 - Run - Lonscale Fell Car Park - Skiddaw Summit and back - 10km Leg 7 - Cycle - Lonscale Fell Car Park - Burns Farm - 6km FINISH |
58K Mountain Bike | The four cycle legs comprise a variety of terrain ranging from tarmac road, bridlepaths to open grassy fells.... Leg 1 - The first Leg from the start is nice and easy on tarmac roads and some bridlepaths Leg 3 - Some further tarmac before entering the toughest cycle section over open fells to Watendlath. Some steep and rugged climbs before descending to the beautiful Borrowdale Valley and then to Seathwaite. Leg 5 - You leave Seathwaite and start to ascend Honister Pass before turning to cycling along some challenging bridal paths right the way up the Borrowdale Valley into Keswick town. You then climb steeply up to Lonscale Fell Car Park. Leg 7 - Steep decent to the A66 - before crossing, and a short rise to Burns Farm and the well earned Finish! |
42K Fell Run | The
three fell runs are up and down each of the three highest Lakeland
Peaks offer a variety of testing and rugged mountain terrain. Leg 2 - Helvellyn - 10k loop course starting with a fairly flat woodland trail before ascending the steep side of Helvellyn to the summit before returning the short route back to Thirlmere. Leg 4 - Sca Fell Pike - Starting from Seathwaite - a 15km out and back course over some of the most rugged terrain in the Lakes. This will be the most challenging run section. Leg 6 - Skiddaw - A final 10km sprint run up and down Skiddaw in the most direct route. |
Team Pairs or Trios | The
Lakeland Slateman Three Peaks Duathlon is a team event. You must start
and finish as a two or three-man, woman or mixed team and be together at all times.
The concept of team pairs/trio is to embrace:
Team Buddies? If you don't know anyone crazy like you to take on this challenge then do not worry! You may enter as and individual and we will pair you up with another competitor of similar ability or possibly with another team pair. Just book your place and request a 'buddy pair up'! We will hopefully find you a compatible partner or team to endure this great event experience together as a pair or even trio. Team Trios This event is a duo or trio event, we will accept three man, women or mixed teams - All team mates will run together throughout. All need to enter individually and declare your team. Team Fours You would simply compete as TWO team pairs but if you choose to compete together as four then this is totally acceptable. Team Trio - Emergency Hook-up! Hopefully not! But it is quite possible that a team mate may drop out just before or during the race with injury, a broken bike or for another reason. If this happens then we would be happy for the other competitor to hook-up with another team and complete the Challenge as a team trio. This would have to be mutually agreed with the other team before or during the race. We will assist with the communication as we want everyone to participate and not be disappointed! |
Route Map | A more detailed OS map is being prepared - However, this one is an advance map course and gives you an idea of the approximate route.. We will ask that you carry a copy of the official hard copy OS map that will contain sufficient detail to navigate this course safely. The use of Smart Phone/Tablet OS mapping and GPS devices is totally acceptable. However, you must also carry an original hard copy OS map at all times. Tip: We recommend you plot your course together well in advance. We have no objection to teams recce sections of the course beforehand. There may well be a checkpoint between Seathwaite and Keswick to ensure all competitors take the same off-road route. All this will be advised nearer the date. |
Experience and Kit Requirement | All
competitors should be competent in mountain biking and fell
running experience along with road and fell navigational skills. The bike and running routes do include some tough and testing terrain but not overly technical. The whole route will have some way-marking to assist you on the run and bike sections. These markers should not be relied upon as over a 100km course they could go missing or be obscure in bad weather. We therefore stress that every team should be prepared to navigate themselves between the given checkpoints using an OS map throughout. Mountain Run Kit Requirement for each competitor:
1. Suitable Mountain Bicycle - (Cyclo-cross or hybrid bikes would be unsuitable) 2. Tools and puncture repair kit 3. Additional water bottles 4. Additional emergency food 5. Additional clothing or bike kit Compulsory Pre-Start Bike and Kit Checks All teams will have their bike and kit checked before they start. Kit Checks: Done at registration from 4pm Friday afternoon/evening Bike Checks: Done at the start on Saturday. The organiser has the right to refuse a team to start the race if they do not satisfy the above requirements. |
Race Registration | All
competitors must register on Friday. This can be done from 4pm. The
required kit for the race must be presented and checked as well as your
bikes will be inspected. Race numbers and other information will be
then given to you. If you are not staying at Burns Farm or traveling up on the day then for convenience, we will check your bikes on Saturday morning before you start. |
Race Briefing | We accept competitors will arrive at different times. We
will be on hand at registration to brief you when you arrive with any
changes there might be. There will be a final race briefing information sheet handed to each team as you register. We will also give an official final race briefing at 6.45am on race day. Any significant or late changes will be displayed on a notice board at the start. |
Prizes | To
be decided - There will be two hand-carved Slateman Challenge Trophies
to be contested for the first Male Team and Mixed Team as well as 1st,
2nd and 3rd team prizes in a variety of age categories.. The Lakeland Slateman events were previously closed events, only open to members of the UK police service. This event is an 'Open Event' but we will have an additional prize category for members of the Police Sport UK members who take part.. |
